Former Juneau resident Michael Patrick Millican died Jan. 26, 2008. He was 43.

Born Oct. 3, 1964, in Salem, Ore., he was the son of William and Martha Millican and the ninth of 10 children.

He lived in Hubbard, Ore., until 1978, when he moved with his family to Detroit, Ore. He relocated to Juneau in 1996 and stayed until 2001. While in Juneau, he worked at the Greens Creek Mine.

He learned to love the outdoors from his many camping trips with his family. He especially enjoyed gathering firewood for his mother, his family said. He also enjoyed spending time with his many friends. His sense of humor was his strength, they said.

Michael was a big man with a big heart and will be missed by many, his family said.

He served on a flag ship in the U.S. Navy while stationed in Bahrain. He was a mill worker, logger and miner in Oregon, Alaska, Washington and Nevada. He was a single father to his son, who was his reason for living, his family said.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1991; and brother, James Irving Millican, in 2000.

He is survived by his son, Michael William Millican; two daughters, Melissa and Misty Millican, of Oregon; mother; seven sisters, Diane Millican, of Salem, Ore., Mary Steele and her husband, Bill, of Coos Bay, Ore., Shirley Lacey, of Juneau, Susan Crowder and her husband, John, of Detroit, Darlene Hutson, of Lone, Wash., Sally Millican, of Veneeta, Ore., and Linda Polk and her husband, Ken, of Juneau; only surviving brother, John Millican, of Lone; and many nieces and nephews.

His wishes were to have his family and friends celebrate his life in an area located high up in the Oregon mountains. The Millican family will hold his memorial on July 4. Please contact family members for details and location.
