Taking the opportunity to make a little history himself Friday, Sen. John McCain chose a woman, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, as his presidential running mate.
Running a campaign to clean up state government, Palin was elected to Alaska's governorship in 2006 and enjoys a wide margin of popularity among the state's residents.
Appearing together Friday in Dayton, Ohio, McCain praised Palin's committment to a new direction for politics as someone who was not from Washington.
"She knows where she comes from and she knows who she works for," McCain told cheering supporters.
Introducing herself to the crowd, Palin echoed McCain's words about his mission in Washington, saying that "it's always safer to avoid risk, but I didn't get into government to do the easy things."
She also commended Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton for "putting 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling," but continued in saying that "the women of America aren't done yet."
Palin will be the second woman in history to run on the presidential ticket for a major party, the first being Democratic New York Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, who ran with Walter Mondale in an unsuccessful attempt to unseat then president Ronald Reagan in 1984.
