Palin Reintroduceds Energy Relief Plan

A new version of the Governor's energy cost-relief plan, which was originally introduced back in May, will be issued on Friday. Currently lawmakers are in a special session to decide on whether or not a license will be awarded to TransCanada Inc. for construction of a natural gas pipeline.

The proposed plan would cost the state $1.2-billion, and would aid Alaskans in dealing with the financial woes caused by rising energy prices. $475-million would be given as grants to the state's utility companies in order to lower customer bills.

In the May announcement made by Palin, she mentioned issuing a $100 per month debit energy cards to each resident. These cards could only be used for fuel needs, allowing each card holder to purchase gas, oil and other fuels. However administration members have stated that those plans had been abandoned.

Instead of the debit card, Palin intends to ask the Legislature to issue money directly to residents.
