Alaska Celebrates Fifty Years Of Statehood

Downtown Anchorage will be going through a time warp this weekend, with the "We're In Weekend." 50 years ago on January 3, 1959, the state of Alaska joined the lower 48, becoming the 49th state to join the Union.

To celebrate this momentous event downtown Anchorage will be playing hosts to a 50s shindig. This 50s themed party will be accompanied by four stages of Alaska's finest musicians and performers in a full day of free family entertainment.

Along with music and entertainment, the event will feature a Firefighters Combat Challenge at 10 a.m., between E & F Streets. The contest will challenge firefighters' athleticism by simulating the essential skills of firefighting.

A historic re-enactment of the 49th star being hung on the American flag will take place at noon on the corner of G and Fourth. Surely this will be a weekend on par with the Solstice.

Most of downtown will be closed to traffic, however the 5th Avenue Garage is free to the public.

Festivities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
