Residents of King Cove have finally jumped over the first hurdle in getting a road to Cold Bay.

The battle has been going on for more than 15 years. The problem is that the road would have to pass through the Izembek and Alaska Penninsula Wildlife Refuges.

Today, the U.S. Senate passed an Enhancement Act which includes land deals in all 50 states.

In Alaska it would mean expanding the refuges while at the same time allowing for a road corridor to Cold Bay. The measure passed 77-20 and is being applauded by locals and by Alaska's Congressional delegation. Supporters know this is a critical first step.
