The Summer Heatwave: Great for fun, Bad for fires

Steve Brawn

Yesterday, Anchorage hit a high of 80 degrees, setting a record for the date. Unofficial readings across the city soared to nearly 90 degrees. The weather is expected to stick around for a few more days before the ridge starts to move and an ocean breeze kicks up. The high temps are great for getting outside, but the wildfire danger is growing everyday.

To date, nearly 354 fires have burned through more than 511,000 acres across the Last Frontier and a few smokejumping and firefighting crews are being brought in from the lower 48.
