Teachers Union Settles Harassment Lawsuit

Tools

Steve Brawn

Alaska's main public school teachers union will pay $170,000 to settle a federal harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The commission claimed former NEA-Alaska executive director Thomas Harvey harassed four female employees by yelling at them and treated men less harshly.

The settlement announced Monday by the commission was the second
against NEA-AK charging gender-based harassment by Harvey, who left the job in 2006.

The earlier case was settled on behalf of three other women for $750,000.

The commission claims management officials at NEA-AK were aware
of Harvey's abusive behavior but took no action to stop it and promoted Harvey to his executive position during the EEOC's first lawsuit on similar charges.
