Drue Pearce is leaving her job as federal pipeline coordinator of an Alaska natural gas pipeline project.

In a statement released Monday, Pearce says President Obama requested her resignation. She says it's effective Jan. 3.

Former President Bush nominated Pearce for the job in 2006.

According to the 2004 law passed by Congress establishing the position, the coordinator's role is to oversee the "expeditious discharge of all activities by federal agencies with respect to an Alaska natural gas transportation project" and ensure that they follow the direction of Congress.

Pearce, a Republican, was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1984 from Anchorage and to the Alaska Senate in
1988. She served as Senate president twice.
