For all those last minute filers desperately seeking help, help may be no more than just a phone call away. For those in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks help can be found by visiting one of the following tax help centers.
Anchorage: Northeast Community Center: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Millennium Hotel: 12 p.m. - 12 a.m.
Juneau: Elgee Rehfeld Mertz: 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Fairbanks: Noel Wein Library: 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.
The information below provides help for those trying to file their federal tax returns.
• 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. -- Call the IRS toll-free number for regular tax assistance: 1-800-829-1040.
• 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. -- Call the IRS toll-free number for help getting the economic stimulus rebate -- 1-866-234-2942.
• 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. -- IRS office in Anchorage, 949 E. 36th Ave.
• 1 to 7 p.m. -- Tax-Aide program in Northeast Community Center within the Muldoon Mall, 1251 Muldoon Road. Service of the AARP and IRS Tax-Aide program.
• Noon to midnight: Millennium Hotel, 4800 Spenard Road. Sponsored by the Alaska Association of Tax Consultants, the University of Alaska Anchorage Accounting Club, Assistance Resources of Alaska and the IRS.
Carol Beckstead, assistant coordinator for the Millennium Hotel event, said the tax consultants group will handle paper returns while the UAA club and the IRS will help with electronic filing.
The Postal Service will do special pickups from the Millennium, including one at midnight, she said.
The sponsors would appreciate donations of stamps for the paper returns that will be filed, she said.
Beckstead said the IRS will give a postmark of today for returns collected today at the Millennium.
If you're going to a free tax preparation site, bring:
• Social Security number for each family member.
• Driver's license or photo identification card.
• W-2 forms from all jobs.
• All 1099 forms and other income statements (for unemployment benefits, bank interest, etc.).
• Child care payment information and name, address and SSN/EIN of your child care provider.
• Property tax and mortgage statements, if any.
• Bank account number, if you want your refund check deposited into your savings or checking account.
• Copy of last year's tax return, if available (helps in preparing this year's return).
Those who cannot file on time should file for an extension, refer to the link below, and remember that an extension does not include an extension on payments.
