Increased energy costs may raise harbor fees in Juneau

Chad news

Docks throughout the city may see a stiff increase in power fees. A recent memo sent by Port Director John Stone to City Manger Rod Swope explained the rational behind a proposed "emergency fee regulation."

The docks's current rate was set when electricity was 9 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Stone. Before avalanches destroyed the Snettisham transmission line Alaska Electric Light & Power was charging customers 11 cents per kilowatt-hour.

According to the private utility, rates are expected to raise to somewhere around 50 cents per kilowatt-hour.

During the Docks and Harbors Board May 1st meetings the issue of regulation is expected to be discussed.
