The Alaska tourist season officially kicked off Wednesday morning in Juneau. The first cruise ship, the Norwegian Star, arrived in port.

For the next six months visitors from all over the world will make the long journey to The Last Frontier. September 27th is considered the last day of the season, which is marked by the departure of the Infinity.

Nearly 1-million cruise ship passengers visited Juneau last year, said Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Lorene Palmer. With an average of $186 projected to be spent by each visitor, a total of $195-million is expected to be brought into the state.

50 ships owned by 12 different cruise lines will arrive throughout the season.
