Come September, Alaskans may be unable to leave the state on a United Airlines flight. The carrier has announced plans to discontinue all Alaska flights beginning in September.

The decision, said spokesman Jeff Kovick, was spurred by record fuel prices and a sagging U.S. economy. The plan was announced back in April, said Kovick, and is part of an overall plan to cut domestic flights by 9-percent whilst reducing its fleet by 30 aircraft.

The Anchorage hub connects to Chicago, where the company is based out of, as well as Denver and San Francisco.

Kovick said that certain routes in other U.S. cities were cut, but Anchorage is the only hub that United has planned to drop entirely.
