A bill expanding the Marine Park System has been signed into lay by Governor Sarah Palin.14 islands near Juneau will be added to the park system which will open more recreation options to Alaskans.

Juneau Senator Kim Elton, who sponsored the bill, said the expansion of the Marine Park System is important to tourism activity, specifically marine-mammal watching. Also included in the bill are measures that would prevent the state from interfering with hunting, fishing and trapping on the islands.

The islands vary in size from Lincoln and parts of Shelter, which provide residents the opportunity to hunt deer, to Indian and Suedla which would be more ideal for picnics.

The next step, said Southeast Parks Supervisor Mike Eberhardt, is to involve the public in a plan for campsites, public use cabins and possibly lodges on the islands.
