Break Up Causes Flooding In Salcha Area

Like clockwork the Tanana River has begun flooding in Salcha. An ice jam on the river is responsible for the flooding, which is pushing the river over the banks of the Salcha.

On Sunday night the National Weather Service issued a flood warning. So far minor flooding has been reported about 40 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

According to Jennifer Yuhas, a special assistant to Borough Mayor Jim Whitaker, the situation is stabilizing. She said monday afternoon that the water level in some flooded areas was receding.

Salcha residents face these spring time flooding threats every year.

The flooding is the result of break up and ice shards that create dams in multiple spots over the river. The jams cause the water to back up until it flows over the river banks.

The break up occurred on Sunday and most likely pushed a mass of ice into the Tanana River.
