With the threat of flooding of the Tanana River, Fairbanks residents are still able find a reason to enjoy the break up. 40 miles southeast of the city minor flooding has been reported, near Salcha, however the breakup has also led to the finishing of the Nenana Ice Classic.

On Sunday night the National Weather Service issued a flood warning, but by Monday afternoon Jennifer Yuhas, special assistant to Borough Mayor Jim Whitaker, said the situation was stabilizing. It was not until the following day that the winning time for the 2008 Ice Classic was announced.

At 10:53 p.m. on Tuesday, the tripod tipped over, said contest officials. Contest officials are still working to determine how many winners choose the correct time for when the ice on the Tanana River went out this year, said Ice Classic manager Cherrie Forness.

Over $303,000 made up this year's jackpot, and winners will soon be contacted to inform them of the good news.

Even with increased fuel costs, the jackpot was still able to top the prior year.

Contestants pay $2.50 a ticket for a chance to guess what date and time, to the minute, that a tripod on the Tanana River ice will move downstream and trip a clock wired to the shore. The tripod begins its trip at Nenana, 55 miles south of Fairbanks.

This was the 92nd year of the Ice Classic.
