Kenai Citizens Group Calls For Grocery Tax Holiday

Tools

Jamey Kirk

A group of Kenai Peninsula citizens has filed an initiative proposing a seasonal exemption from sales taxes on groceries. James Price heads the newly formed Alaskans for Grocery Tax Relief Now, and he and the group aim to institute a tax holiday from September 1 through May 31.

Price said that the borough has accrued large increases in revenue from the 1-percent increase in the borough wide sales tax. The tax took effect in January.

If approved, the measure would make it so the tax only remained active during the tourist season. Only food would be taxed by the measure.

In the next two weeks the borough clerks' office will determine if the initiative language meets legal criteria.
