The government's star witness at the corruption trial of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is expected back in the witness chair tomorrow. Bill Allen admitted under cross-examination today that he never tried to bribe Stevens. He was grilled about when he told prosecutors of a mutual friend who allegedly came to Allen saying that Stevens was only asking for bills on home renovations to "cover" himself under House ethics rules. Earlier, phone calls between Allen and Stevens were played in court. The calls were recorded two years ago, and show Stevens was both worried and defiant about the FBI investigation.
