Alaska's economy is in much different shape then the rest of the nation. Experts say hundreds of jobs will be lost this year. What is not clear is exactly how many.

One report by Anchorage consulting firm Northern Economics says about 34,000 jobs will be lost in the natural resource sector. That includes oil, gas, and mining.

Another by the Alaska Department of Labor is projecting 700 jobs to be lost this year, showing a relatively mild impact.

While the numbers are dim state economists say the job market here ended on a high last year especially in the retail sector.

Ultimately, the best litmus test for the status of the Alaska's economy is in the price of oil.
