Cruise Ship Limps into Whittier

Chad news

A large cruise ship in Prince William Sound is slowly making its way into Whittier with only one of its two motors working.

A power blip cut power to a propulsion device on the Regent Seven Seas Mariner. The Mariner won't make port until midnight. It was expected in Whittier at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The company says all of its 1,300 customers affected are being accommodated. Its staff is re-arranging flight schedules for the people on board and finding hotel rooms for those who were getting ready to set sail Wednesday.

A tug boat is joining the ship to dock as a safety precaution.

“We're assuming that the repairs can be made tomorrow and the shop can sail 24 hours late. In other words, leave a day late and run a six-night itinerary instead of a seven-night that has been published,” Andrew Poulton of the Regent Seven Seas said. “The ship has been under its own power. I think it's important to note that the generator didn't fail. The ship has full power in terms of electricity, air conditioning, refrigeration and lighting, all of that king of stuff is fully operational.”

Officials say they won't know the extent of the problem until the Mariner docks and divers can examine the propulsion devise.
