Juneau Assembly OKs Land Donation

Tools

Steve Brawn

The Juneau Assembly has voted to accept the donation of almost 36 acres of private property on Douglas Island.

The Southeast Alaska Land Trust intends to buy the land from a private landowner with part of the $6 million that Juneau International Airport is paying in wetlands mitigation for airport projects.

If the sale is completed, the trust will donate the property to the city for use as a park.

The land was part of the Tongass National Forest until John F. McDonald homesteaded it in 1923. It has two salmon spawning streams
and nearby Hilda Cove is known as a popular recreation spot.
