If it keeps up and it looks like it will, this winter looks like one for the record books in southeast Alaska.
If it snows this weekend, it could add up to the most snow ever to fall in Juneau. Right now Juneau has 183.2 inches of snow, about 11 inches from the all-time record. The forecast calls for up to another foot, so the record could be broken this weekend.
The city's snow-removal budget has been blown out by the snowfall. However, folks at Eaglecrest aren't complaining. There, more than 450 inches of snow has fallen.
Kirk Duncan, Eaglecrest general manager, said, "With this much snow, it's kind of a task to get everything done, but the crew has been doing really well, and the folks in town and skiers and snowboarders are just loving what's going on."
Tim and Noah Spengler and Megan Behnke, skiers, said, "I can't remember anything like this. Well these guys were born and raised here, and I have lived here 22 years, and this is by far the best -- nothing close!”
Tim and Noah Spengler said, "Well last weekend they had a big ski race up here, and they had to cancel it why did they cancel it? … ‘cause it was too much snow and I am going to have a race tomorrow and I can't wait.”
“He's on the race team. He enjoys that quite a bit. I never heard of too much snow."
Duncan said, “It just starts adding up. You eventually get to a point where you can't put it anywhere. We have banks, 10-foot high snow banks in the parking lot, and when we start plowing the snow, what do we do with the new snow, and it's a constant challenge, but it's a lot better than the alternative."
Eaglecrest has the deepest snow of any resort in the nation.
