ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (AP) - About 2,000 people
filled a hangar at Elmendorf Air Force Base to warmly greet
President Obama.

Obama on Thursday thanked the soldiers for the sacrifices they have made and extended the same gratitude to their spouses and families.

After his remarks, Obama mingled with the crowd, shaking hands as many took pictures of the president with their digital cameras.

It was Obama's first-ever visit to Alaska, and he said he has now been to all 50 states.

Obama visited as Air Force One made a refueling stop en route to Tokyo.

Obama was initially scheduled to visit the Alaska base on Wednesday, but the schedule was set back a day so he could attend a memorial at Fort Hood, Texas.
