Future of the Nike Missile Site Under Discussion

Chad news

ANCHORAGE – The Army held a public hearing on Thursday night regarding the future of the Nike Missile Site on Ft. Richardson – several groups are working with the Army to preserve the location as a historical cold war site.

Four Alternative plans were outlined on Thursday night, ranging from leaving the site “as is,” to a total demolition. The Army's preferred plan fall in between those two extremes, and would involve preserving 16 of the buildings for history and tearing down the rest of the site.

An environmental cleanup would have to happen and old missile silos and bunkers would have to be sealed off with concrete. Additional fencing and security measures would be added if that plan is approved.

According to the Chief of the Environmental Division for Ft. Richardson, Kevin Gardner, “any access to the site would certainly be under kind of some rules and procedures that the military would have to put in place just to make sure, a, it's not interfering with the mission and endangering any body's health.”

Public comment on the project is open until July 13 and the Military will come up with a recommendation by sometime in August.
