WWII Submarine Chaser Doubling as a Fishing Vessel

The Saturn, a WWII Sub Chaser from 1940, now in southeast Alaska, in use as a fishing vessle - the ship will be painted.

JUNEAU - Out of 100-World War II (WWII) Submarine Chasers, one of them is not only still floating, it's now working as a fishing vessel in southeast Alaska - That doesn't mean it doesn't still need some upkeep...

It's time for the annual Paint Job for the Saturn. The Saturn was built in 1940 in a Los Angeles shipyard as an anti-submarine warfare vessel.

The U.S. used the sub chasers in WWI and WWII to destroy German U Boats, on the U.S. Coast trying to sink merchant convoys.

On Wednesday, the Saturn earns her keep as a fish tendering and Salmon packing facility. The 3-man crew says that no mater where the ship docks, it always generates some interest. According to Captain Jim Branda, "There is always somebody saying my uncle or my grandfather...somebody was on here, it's pretty neat really. So I get to talk to a lot of different people who tell me a lot of different
stories about it."

The Saturn will continue to tender Salmon on its fishing route on Thursday. The sip is based in Ketchikan.
