Historical Group Takes Steps to Protect Dunes

Tools

Sand dunes at the mouth of the Kasilof River may get help from an unusual source.

The Kasilof Regional Historical Association is stepping in to
protect dunes from human-caused degradation.

Association President Brent Johnson says his group hopes to
erect a post-and-chain fence around dunes to protect them from
motorized vehicles.

The fence would be modeled after a barrier installed around
beach dunes on the north and south shores of the mouth of the Kenai
River.

The Kasilof project is estimated to cost about $65,000, most of
which could come from the legislature.

The Department of Natural Resources has primary authority over
the area and a fence would have to go through a land-use permitting
process and coastal zone review.
