Drilling Decision Draws Mixed Reviews

Tools

Steve Brawn

A decision from the white house this morning promises to change offshore drilling off the coast of Alaska. President Obama announced a proposal today that would cancel leases in Bristol Bay but allow for new exploration in the Beaufort and Chukchi, after an environmental study. Environmentalists say that the ban in Bristol Bay is good but allowing for the drilling in the arctic is a bad idea. They say that too little is known about drilling in the area. Fisherman that use Bristol Bay to make a living are excited about the ban. They hope the lack of drilling will help fish returns.

Alaska's two Senators both support the new ruling but Senator Murkowski says she is hopeful that the leases will actually be allowed.
