Renovations to Maggie's Home Won't Keep Her Here

Maggie the Elephant at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. The scab, from collapsing when she was ill is visible on the side of her face.

Chad news

ANCHORAGE - Maggie the Elephant is still preparing for a move south despite a sand floor installed in her house over a week ago.

Today, on Monday, the weather was nice outside and Maggie was posing for pictures as curious visitors looked on. Zoo Director Pat Lampi says that Maggie is doing fine and she's almost fully recovered from her bout with colic.

The scabs on the side of her, head caused from when she fell, are healing. Her training is going well. A well respected Elephant Vet was out there to check her out on Monday, and the results from those test should be available soon.

Lampi says that the Zoo will continue its great reputation even with Maggie gone. He says while Maggie is one of the favorites, she's not the Zoo's biggest draw. "She's very popular with the local people, absolutely, a lot of kids love maggie, we all love maggie, I think the biggest draw is the alaska animals," Lampi told us.

The Alaska Zoo Board is still looking at locations for Maggie. They say they are still on target to send her south.
