Begich Introduces New Oil Legislation

Tools

Steve Brawn

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has prompted U.S. Sen. Mark Begich to introduce several bills aimed at making energy development safer.

The latest pair would require NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard to research a spill's potential effect on Arctic wildlife and require oil companies to deposit money into a liability trust fund.

Begich last month rolled out legislation that would put the Interior secretary in charge of assessing damage caused by a spill and determining how much money a company would have to deposit into an account to pay those affected.

The senator plans to introduce a fourth bill that deals with citizen oversight of oil and gas development.
