The suspect who was shot and killed by two Anchorage police officers on Monday has been identified. Investigators say 57-year-old Steven Callan was driving the stolen blue Jeep that led police on a high speed chase. Officers cornered Callan in the Carrs parking lot at Jewel Lake Road and Dimond Boulevard.
An Anchorage police officer tried to stop the vehicle at about 4:05 p.m. on Monday. Police say they had chased the same vehicle earlier in the day in a felony theft case. Officers say Callan failed to stop and fled from police both times.
When Callan turned into the Carrs parking lot, three police vehicles blocked and pinned the vehicle in. Police say Callan began intentionally ramming into parked vehicles and into the marked police vehicles as well.
APD says two officers fired their weapons at the suspect. Witnesses say it sounded like as many as 15 shots were fired. Both Callan and his passenger, 33-year-old Jamie Smith, were hit by police. Callan died on the scene, and Smith was taken to the hospital with a minor gunshot wound to the arm. APD says one police officer, Derek Hsieh, suffered a minor gunshot wound to his abdomen, possibly from a ricochet that hit his utility belt.
The two police officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave for three days, per department policy. Their names will be released at that time.
