Top Southeast StoryElection Results From Around the StateAlaska voters in Fairbanks and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough rejected sales taxes Tuesday while measures that could lead to increased availability of booze were winning in Bethel and Kotzebue. The Fairbanks 3 percent sales tax proposal was tied to a measure to reduce property taxes. The plan could have increased spending on roads, police and fire protection by $8 million. Former Mayor Steve Thompson, a supporter, said critics used scare tactics to defeat the measure. Read more » More Southeast StoriesABC's PFD Guess... $1378.51Well it's that time of the year again, when Alaskans get a boost to their bank accounts. The permanent Fund Dividend amount will be announced this afternoon, by Governor Sean Parnell. Yesterday, I sat down and did some number crunching to estimate the amount of this year's check. Here is what I came up with. First of all, $875,000,000 has been transferred into the fund from the PFD Corporation, to be distributed out among check recipients; that we know. Of that money, we estimate that about $4,000,000 will be taken out for state fees, unclaimed checks from previous years, and so on. That leaves the fund with about $871,000,000 left to send out to the lucky Alaskans who will get a PFD check this year. Read more » Disney To Offer Alaska CruisesDisney Cruise Lines for the first time is offering cruises to Alaska. Disney says it will offer cruises during a four-month season of seven-night sailings aboard the Disney Wonder in 2011. The cruise ship will depart Vancouver, British Columbia, and visit popular ports in Southeast Alaska, such as Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz says Disney guests have longed to explore the wild, natural beauty of Alaska. The Disney Wonder will be outfitted with a 2,500-square-foot cafe with floor-to-ceiling curved glass windows. Read more » 1 dead, 1 Injured in Ketchikan ShootingOne young man is dead and another injured following a double shooting in Ketchikan. Police chief Ed Talik says the shooting occurred inside a home on Main Street at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He says when police arrived they found one man dead and the other suffering from a gunshot wound. Talik says it appears that a 21-year-old man entered the home, shot the other man and then turned the gun on himself, killing himself. Read more » Southeast Headlines
