Fire Damages Ketchikan Furniture Store

Tools

Steve Brawn

Fire damaged a Ketchikan furniture store, but there were no injuries.

Fire Chief Jim Hill says a report of smoke was phoned in Tuesday night while the store was closed, and firefighters discovered flames outside the building, near a loading-dock. The firefighters quickly extinguished those flames but had to peel away metal siding to reach the fire inside the walls.

Firefighters teamed with civilians to evacuate residents from apartments located on the second-floor of the building. Hill didn't know the precise number of evacuees, but noted that some residents were working at the time and others left on their own.

Hill says the apartments escaped damage. As for the store, Hill provided a damage estimate of $20,000.

Investigators are trying to determine what started the fire.
