FAIRBANKS, AK- After serving as co-captains for the 2007-08 season, Alaska's Mike Titus and Colin Matteson once again shared team honors at the men's basketball banquet on Saturday, as the duo were named the team's Most Valuable Players.

Titus, a mainstay in the Nanook lineup over the past four seasons, averaged 9.2 points per game for Alaska this season, including a career-best 23-point performance against Simpson University and a 22-point outing in his penultimate Patty Center game against Western Oregon. His 25 steals were second-best on the team, and Titus pulled in 3.1 rebounds a game for the Blue and Gold as well. He finishes his Alaska career with 763 career points, good for 33rd on the school's all-time scoring list.

Matteson, meanwhile, was one of only two players to start all 27 of the Nanooks' games this season, and led the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Matteson saved some of his best basketball for the conference season, scoring in double-figures in 15 of the team's 18 GNAC games. The Washington native recorded his first career double-double against Montana State Billings on Jan. 24 (20 points, 12 rebounds), and scored a career-high 31 points against Saint Martin's in the team's final game on March 8. Matteson also finished second on the team in total rebounds with 146, and assists with 40.

Other award winners on the evening included Mladen Begojevic, who took home the Most Inspirational Award. The sharpshooter from Ruma, Serbia enjoyed a fine first season with the Nanooks, shaking off a number of injuries to score 11.4 points per game and lead the team in shooting, hitting 45.8 percent from the floor.

Freshman David Cannamore was named the team's Most Improved Player, as the Eagle River forward quickly established himself as a reliable option from the bench. Cannamore saw time in 24 games for Alaska this season, and earned his first Toyota Player of the Game honor with a 16-point performance against Montana State Billings on Feb. 23.

Barrow native Bobby Pico earned the coach's award for Most Heart. Despite dealing with a back injury for a large part of the season, the freshman point guard brought relentless hustle and determination every time he took the floor. Pico averaged 19.6 minutes, 5.0 points, and 2.3 rebounds per game for Alaska, and was third on the team with 35 assists.

Sophomore forward Kevin Atkins took home the coach's award for Best Rebounder, using his 6'6" frame and his athleticism to grab a team-best 210 boards on the season. Atkins, who averaged 7.8 rebounds per game, was the second-leading rebounder in the conference, trailing only UAA's Carl Arts.

Newcomer Nash Maynard also got in on the awards, as he earned the team's Sixth Man Award. Since joining the team in early February, Maynard established himself as an impact player off the bench, scoring 10 points against Western Washington and turning heads with a team season-best 17-rebound night against Saint Martin's.

Freshman Mike Anderson rounded out the awards, winning the coach's Perseverance Award for his work ethic and dedication to the team. A native of Anchorage, Anderson averaged 1.3 ppg and 1.6 rpg in his first season with the Blue and Gold, including a season-high six points against Montana State Billings on Feb. 23.
