ANCHORAGE - Alaska Anchorage volleyball coach Chris Green announced Wednesday that a pair of local players – middle blocker Jackie Matthisen and outside hitter McKenzie Moss – have joined the Seawolf roster for the upcoming season.
Moss, 6-0, was an All-Cook Inlet Conference first-team selection in 2007 and a two-time team MVP at Bartlett High. Also an all-state softball star for the Golden Bears, she joins the Seawolves as a true freshman this fall.
Matthisen, 5-11, helped East High to the CIC title and a 4A state runner-up finish as a senior in 2006. She was also a two-time All-CIC selection and twice earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the state championships. Matthisen will redshirt for the Seawolves this season after transferring from Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Oregon, where she played on that school's first-ever NCAA Tournament team in 2007.
Both Moss and Matthisen are also alumni of the Midnight Sun Volleyball Club, having played on its travel team for multiple years.
“We’re thrilled to have Jackie and McKenzie join the program,” said Green, who enters his first season at UAA this fall. “They are both hard workers and bring great attitudes to the court every day. McKenzie is a raw talent but has shown us some nice things in practice so far, while Jackie should play an important role in 2009 with her versatility along the front row.”
Green also announced the team will hold a meet-and-greet session before Saturday night’s Alumni Match. The meet-and-greet will go from 7-8 p.m. in the dance studio of the Wells Fargo Sports Complex; light appetizers and refreshments will be served.
The 2008 Seawolves then make their premiere at 9 p.m. when they take on a group of former UAA players. Admission is free.
At the conclusion of the match – which is being held as part of UAA’s Campus Kickoff celebration – the Office of Student Life will give away an Alaska Airlines round-trip ticket to a currently enrolled student, plus a Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout ticket package and other prizes for members of the general public. Sign-up will take place at Campus Kickoff festivities earlier Saturday evening, and one must be present at the drawing to win. Visit uaa.alaska.edu/studentlifeandleadership for more information.
